The traumatic marriage split led to a nervous breakdown and his "grounding" by BA but Mr Vaughan‘s behaviour, said the judge, was "bizarre and inexplicable and, objectively, profoundly irresponsible". The dispute between the pair revolved around the matrimonial home in Stonor, near Henleyon–Thames, Oxfordshire.

The judge told the court: "It has to be said that, after making every allowance for his illness, that the husband has been guilty of serious financial and forensic misbehaviour during the past two years." "His hostility towards the wife, which may be reciprocated, is of sickening intensity". Over an 18–month period after the separation, Mr Vaughan had "recklessly dissipated" more than 100,000 of his own assets "by gambling or other improvidence" and his behaviour was described as "bizarre and inexplicable and, objectively, profoundly irresponsible". Although that was largely due to the depressive illness he was suffering at the time, and he could not be held "morally culpable" for his reckless expenditure, the judge said it had served to reduce the pot of marital assets that stood to be divided between the warring couple.
